The «red beetle» has arrived

Posted on:

All owners who have palm trees in their yards are warned that the lethal-to-palms «red beetle» has eventually spread to our region, despite all efforts and warnings of the Regional Services (see related publication in June 2012 on our website). It has already almost completely wiped out the palms of Phocaea and some cases have occurred in our settlement too.

Addressing this problem is difficult and not always crowned with success. It requires thorough spraying with special pesticide for palms and should be done by the gardeners of each property.

Irresponsible disposal of infected plants in nearby fields instead of collecting and burying them by certified workers is the main reason for the spread of the insect. If you find infected plants you are to immediately notify the Office of Quality and Phytosanitary Controls of Central Macedonia in Polygyros, tel +30 2371 351270, +30 2371 351282 or online at agro12@halkidiki.gov.gr.
