Fire Prevention Rules

95% of all forest fires in Greece start from human activities.
It is our responsibility!

Prevention measures

  • Remove any dead vegetation from your property.
  • Cut-off tree branches that reach the house roof.
  • Clean regularly -every 15 days- the house roof and yard from pine needles and dead leaves.
  • Do not leave piles of trash or flammable materials at the yard, garden or the forest. Take them out at the streets for the collection service to pick them up (see the Regulation at the Members Area of our internet site).
  • Be sure that your water hoses are long enough to reach every spot of your property.
  • Acquire a water tank.
  • If you have a swimming pool, it is a good practice to keep a portable water-pump with a long hose as a fire-fighting tool.
  • Avoid keeping fuels such as wood or gas by the house. Secure them in a fireproof place.
  • Mower fuel should be kept in fireproof tanks.
  • Put a net at the chimney end, to keep burning debris from entering the house.

We never…

  • Set fire on our trash or dead vegetation, in order to clean our plot.
  • Use outdoors any tools or engines that produce sparks.
  • Set an open fire for barbeque
  • Barbeque in the forest or in areas with dead vegetation during the summer months
  • Dispose off burning cigarettes or butts
  • Use the forest-fire safety zones. As they must be always open and free for the fire brigade vehicles
  • Park our cars in high vegetation, as the catalyst may cause fire.
  • Set-up any fire in the forest.

If the fire approaches your house

  • Wet the area aroud the house with lots of water, then save the hoses securely – they will be needed again afterwards.
  • Cover your car with wet blankets and heavy cloths.
  • Close all windows and the chimney openning.
  • Close any gas cylinder valvs.
  • Have a portable light handy, as electric power cuts may occur.
  • Do not leave the house unless instructed to do so by the authorities.
  • Seek a safe route to exit the dangerous area. If near the sea, go into the water.

In case the fire reaches your house

  • Get in the house.
  • Close all windows and any opennings in order to stop any air circulation.
  • Place thick wet pieces of cloth behind the doors.
  • Cover your face with wet cloth for protection against smoke and hot air. Put on wet wool clothing and hat. Stay in the basement and close the door firmly.
  • When the fire reaches the house, lay down on the floor face-down, nose to the ground, and breath through a wet woolen cloth.
  • Do not leave the house, as it is your sole protection from the fire flames.
  • Keep calm. Forest fires pass quickly. They move in an average speed of 20 to 50 meters per minute.
  • Do not approach the fire-fighting front.
  • After the fire passes, keep breathing through the wet cloth as smoke still prevails.
  • If your house is no more safe, move towards the burned-down area, at a place free of trees.
  • Patrol the area and put down spots of fire.
