Speakeasies were formed in the 1920s as a means to get around the everyday hassle of law enforcement watching for people violating the 18th Amendment. As a result of Prohibition, the speakeasy was an established institution. For every legitimate saloon that closed as a result of the new law, half dozen underground palaces sprung up. These speakeasies were one of the many ways that people during the 1920′s and early 1930′s obtained illegal alcohol. By the middle of the decade there were thought to be 100,000 speakeasies.
«The Speakeasies” Swing Band!» was formed in Thessaloniki, Greece. Nobody knows when! Some place their birth in September 2009 when Manolis, Panos K. & Panos V. met Caterina. Others believe that the band was shaped when the four friends took to the streets to play «christmas carols». There are also those, more down to earth, who set the beginning of the SSB on their first appearance in the SwingALONICA on May 2010. By that time, Giannis, Thanos & Ilias had already joined the band. In October Stergios joined the band too, bringing us to the band’s current form.Since then, the band gave several concerts in bars, concert halls, festivals and on radio and television, in both Greece and Europe.
For one night only this amazing swing band will perform at Garden Theatre and promise to make all of us dance all night!
